It’s no secret that organisations aiming for ambitious goals can’t rely solely on individuals to get there. Even the most talented person can only achieve so much on their own. As Michael Jordan put it, “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.”
The data backs this up. A Deloitte global survey found that 65% of CEOs and leaders think a team centric model is important, but only 7% feel “very ready” – and only 5% rate themselves as “very effective” – at leading teams. Reid Hoffman sums it up well:
“No matter how brilliant your mind or strategy, if you’re playing a solo game, you’ll always lose out to a team.”
Breakthrough performance is always a collective endeavour. You need the power of the collective to achieve anything significant.
Many organisations understand this in theory, but in practice, much of the effort put into performance development still focuses on the individual. We see it in the resource dedicated to individual selection assessments, one-on-one coaching, and personal performance evaluations.
While developing individual talent is important, it’s only part of the equation.
If true high performance lies in the strength of the collective, our focus needs to shift toward understanding and developing that collective. Supporting teams and groups paves the way to collective excellence, unlocking the potential for true transformation.
And transformation starts with understanding where you’re at today. Knowing the current state of a team – its baseline – is the foundation for growth and high performance.
Our X-Model is designed to generate that insight for teams, sparking the collective action needed to achieve breakthrough performance. Find out more here.
