Leading Virtually - driving performance in a changing context

Blog

We all know the parameters of managing teams effectively changed dramatically as we began remote working last year. The accelerated rate of adoption gave us all a steep learning curve. For some, the transition was a smooth one, but for others this involved encountering a few pitfalls on the way.

We’ve worked with many leaders and teams during the last year both in the UK and abroad, and varying sizes of organisation too. While there is no text book for getting things right, we have managed to gather some useful insights on the good, the bad and the ugly.

The ones who ‘got it right’ have sought and achieved balance. They made space for both tactical and future focussed conversation, used tech to their advantage, were flexible and adult. The ones who got it ‘not quite right’, met a bit too regularly, turning daily team check-ins into a tactical justification exercise. They let themselves and their teams be controlled by technology rather than use it to their advantage.

If you are looking for some pointers, here are some ways to help strike the right balance this year. It’s by no means an exhaustive list, but one that may be a helpful starting point.
